Indeed, many people who want to get divorced quickly, or do not wish to spend a fortune on their divorce, need guidance on whether to use social media, but the reality is that with so many people posting about important life milestones, they invariably will talk about their divorce on Facebook, Twitter and other social media venues.
With that said, the question is: should you talk about your breakup on social media? The answer is, it depends. There are tasteful and tacky ways to talk about everything, and a divorce is no different. As such, this post will provide some examples of when it is okay to talk about your split.
Thanking people for support – During such a difficult time, it normal to receive phone calls and other forms of well-wishes. While you may want to thank people individually, it is in good taste to send out a post that thanks the many people who are supporting you.
Disproving the rumors – As we alluded to earlier, people have gotten used to sharing details of their lives, so there may be rumors floating around about the status of your marriage. A social media post, albeit a short one, could set the record straight without being mean or spiteful towards your soon-to-be ex.
Never talk about the divorce process or involve the children – Children’s privacy should be protected and discussions about how your divorce is likely will exacerbate the tension in the divorce process.
Showing you’re available – While many people may not do this through posts or statements, changing one’s status from “married” to “single” or “it’s complicated” is another way to show that you are available.
