Divorce is not just a difficult situation that adults deal with. Children are also significantly affected when their moms and dads break up. Often, kids may not understand what is going on or they may think they did something to cause the divorce. They can have difficulty adjusting to new arrangements and dealing with emotions they may not even be able to identify.
That is why it can be crucial that protecting the well-being of the children is a top priority in any divorce. Recently, people in California may have read about an upsetting child custody case in another state involving two angry parents and an alleged drug addiction that was putting their kids in danger.
The parents involved in this case share two children. The couple divorced in 2011 and since then, the mother has been acting as the primary caregiver. However, during a recent child custody hearing, evidence was presented that indicated she is struggling with a serious addiction to prescription drugs.
Reports state that the mother has been taking multiple powerful anti-anxiety medications for years, including times when she was caring for her children on her own. She was also reportedly going out of her way to see a number of different doctors in order to get several prescriptions in short amounts of time.
This troubling case also involved other unfavorable accusations, but the drug use proved to be most concerning. The judge stated that because the mother posed a danger to her kids, they should instead live with their father in Texas and he was awarded custody.
Stories like this can serve as a reminder that there is so much more than parental interests at stake in a child custody arrangement. If California parents can remember this and stay focused on their children rather than each other, it can be possible to work toward a solution that is most beneficial for the children.
