Folsom Divorce And Paternity Attorneys | Helping Clients File Parentage Actions
Paternity claims (known as parentage actions in California) allow unmarried individuals to have a court determine who a child's parents are. Whereas married individuals are presumed to be the parents of any children born during a marriage, unmarried couples must receive judicial determination in order to be recognized as a child's parents.
For unmarried parents, child custody, visitation and child support orders cannot be made until their parentage is established. Individuals can establish parentage by voluntarily signing a form called a Declaration of Paternity. When there is some dispute about who a child's parents are, parentage may be established by order of a court, which can require genetic testing to determine whether a man is the father to any children involved.
Our attorneys help our clients navigate these complex legal processes. We know that in many cases — especially when parents need financial support for their children — time is of the essence. We work efficiently to help resolve these matters and give our clients assurance that their rights and their children's well-being are both protected.
