DIANE WASZNICKY: Custody cases involve visitation and they can involve parents that are not married, parents that are married. The law makes no distinction.
My clients come in wanting, usually, either more time with their child, or trying to find out how they can protect the child or at least make sure their child's needs are being taken care of.
I think the benefit I bring as an attorney to a custody situation is my experience. That experience affects my ability to be very objective with clients, which is what, in my opinion, they're paying me for.
One of the things I do in the custody arena is serve on a panel of attorneys who are appointed to represent children in the family law court. And some of the children I represented I have represented for as many as 15 years.
The ideal outcome in a custody situation is that the child's needs are being met, hopefully by both parents, because that's ultimately the best thing for their child.
